Our Field
Kenya is home to over 53 million people—53 million souls for whom Christ died. Sadly many Kenyans have yet to hear the clear message of salvation by the grace of God through faith in Christ.
God’s heart is for all to hear the Gospel—including the 53 million souls in Kenya. This is why we are here! God has given us a burden to share the hope of Christ with Kenyans and to establish Gospel-preaching churches where they can attend, join, grow spiritually, and learn to serve God. We desire to train young men for the ministry who will then go out to their towns and villages to share the Gospel and start new churches.
Basic Facts about Kenya
Kenya is an equatorial country on the east coast of Africa and measures approximately 219,746 square miles (about the size of the state of Texas). It is home to a variety of beautiful landscapes and an exotic array of wildlife. The people of Kenya are just as diverse as it landscapes. The 53 million people of Kenya are made up of 43 African tribes, Arabs, Indians, and Europeans. Each tribe has its own language. English is widely spoken in urban areas, but Swahili is the main trade language.
A Diverse Spiritual Climate
Before the arrival of missionaries in Eastern Africa, Kenya was plagued by tribal warfare and the satanic traditions of animism and witchcraft. God opened the door for Christian missionaries to enter the country when it became a British colony in the early 1900’s. Today 87% of Kenyans claim to be Christian, but this percentage gives false hope as most are trusting their good works instead of Christ alone for salvation.
Sadly, many Kenyans are confused by the teachings of unbiblical churches. The Roman Catholic church abounds and all kinds of protestant and charismatic churches can be found throughout the country. It is also common for Kenyans to take elements of Christianity and mix them with their traditional tribal religions.
False religions abound in Kenya. Each of the forty-three tribes maintains its own traditional religion (a few tribes are more steeped in their traditional religious practices than others). Islam is the second largest religion in Kenya; mosques can be found in almost every town. There is also a presence of the eastern religions of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism.
The Need for Truth in the Midst of Confusion
Confusion can only be taken away from the heart and mind by the truth, and so many people of Kenya are ready to hear the Truth of the Gospel, but they need someone to tell them. Poor health care, terrorism, and ethnic violence strike fear into the heart of many Kenyans; they desperately need the hope that is found in trusting Jesus Christ as their personal Savior!
